Early Life and Family Background
Whitney Warren Jr. was born on January 29th, 1898, in New York City, into a family of considerable social and professional prominence.
His father, Whitney Warren Sr. was a celebrated architect of the Gilded Age and co-founder of Warren & Wetmore, one of the most prestigious architectural firms of early 20th-century America.
Born in 1864, Warren Sr. studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was heavily influenced by classical European styles that would later define his work.
His firm, Warren & Wetmore, became synonymous with luxury and grandeur, designing some of the most iconic American buildings of the era: their most notable achievement was Grand Central Terminal in New York City, a masterpiece of Beaux-Arts design completed in 1913, which remains today a symbol of architectural excellence.
The firm also worked on numerous high-profile projects, including hotels like the Biltmore Hotel and the Vanderbilt Hotel, as well as private residences, clubs, and institutional buildings.
