Édouard Stern was one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in European finance, renowned for his brilliance, ambition, and abrasive style.

Beyond his professional achievements, Stern’s personal life was equally complex.

He cultivated a lifestyle defined by luxury and intensity, moving between Geneva, Paris, and the world’s financial capitals. Both his relationships and his personality —at once charismatic and harsh — fuelled deep controversies among the people who knew him.

Personal Life

In 1983, Édouard Stern married Béatrice David-Weill, daughter of Michel David-Weill.

This marriage linked two banking dynasties: the Sterns and the David-Weills.

The couple had three children together: Mathilde, Louis, and Henri. By all accounts, notwithstanding his extremely busy schedule, Édouard was seen as a supportive and present father for the couple’s three children.

Édouard and Beatrice separated in 1998, but the separation was so discreet that even Michel David-Weill was not aware that his daughter and Édouard had parted ways (he thought they had simply started sleeping in different rooms).

Regardless of their split, the connection between the Sterns and David-Weills remained a fixture of French high-society.

Tragedy

After his divorce in 1998, Édouard Stern’s personal life took several dramatic turns.

In 1997, Édouard Stern began a relationship with Julia Lemigova, the former Miss USSR 1990 (and who is now known as the partner of tennis legend Martina Navratilova).

In 1999, Édouard and Julia welcomed a son, Maximillion.
